HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOU SESSION

First of all, well done for taking this step! Whether you're feeling hopeful, nervous, or even skeptical, this is a space where you and your partner can be heard, understood, and supported. Here’s how to get the most out of your session.

SET YOUR INTENTIONS

BEFORE THE SESSION, TAKE TIME TO REFLECT;

  • What do I want to get out of this session?

  • What are the biggest challenges I’m experiencing in my relationship right now?

  • What do I hope will change in our communication, connection, or dynamic?

IT'S NATURAL TO HAVE STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT YOUR RELATIONSHIP, BUT THERAPY WORKS BEST WHEN BOTH PARTNERS:​

  • Are willing to listen without immediately reacting.

  • Stay open to different perspectives.

  • Focus on understanding rather than blaming.

BRING AWARENESS TO YOUR COMMUNICATION:

HOW DO YOU USUALLY HANDLE CONFLICT? ARE THERE ANY PATTERNS THAT MIGHT BE BE CONTRIBUTING TO THE DIFFICULTIES IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

  • Do you shut down and avoid difficult conversations?

  • Do arguments escalate quickly?

  • Does one of you feel unheard or dismissed?

BE HONEST (BUT ALSO BE KIND)

HONESTY IS IMPORTANT, BUT THE YOU EXPRESS YOURSELF MATTERS TOO, TRY USING: 

  • “I feel…” statements instead of “You never…” or “You always…”

  • Listening to understand rather than just to reply.

  • Taking responsibility where needed—change happens on both sides.​​

EXPECT SOME DISCOMFORT

Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone! Some conversations might feel tough, but that’s a sign that you’re addressing real issues. Therapy isn’t about winning or losing—it’s about finding ways to move forward together.

LOGISTICS BE READY FOR THE SESSION

  • Be on time – Make sure you’re in a quiet space with no distractions.

  • In-person or Online? – If it’s online, check your internet connection and find a private space where you feel comfortable talking. If in person, but now want on line - jut let me know, there will be a link in your email or i can send you a new one.

  • Take Notes – If something stands out to you, jot it down for reflection after the session.
